UPnP Not Successful XBox / 4GEE Router

billylawson

I just got the  4GEE Router as Fibre was not great in my area.

My son is having some issues with his Xbox and it says 'UPnP Not Successful' when playing some games and he needs this working.

I need to somehow apply this on the router.

Thanks in advance

Any ideas how I can do this on the 4GEE Router?

@billylawson   Have you logged in to the router as admin to check the settings as stated?     On the router you should see a IP Address.  On web browser type in that IP address and then password and user name shown on the router (probably admin for both)

I have a similar issue except I use personal hotspot how would I go about fixing this as it used to work fine but of late it has stopped working

Hi @OliverH ,

Before you take steps to re-enable this functionality, if it is still available, I would recommend that you familiarise yourself with the below information.

Up until recently, I had UPnP enabled on my router as some time in the past I thought it was a safe and convenient thing to have enabled as no warning was present against the option. After I looked into the related information, I have decided to turn the functionality off as it seems to me there should be a huge red warning against the option in the router.

It may well be the case that the functionality is disabled by default or removed altogether depending on how rigorous the security policies are for the service provider to secure devices running their firmware.

I appreciate the warning but one of the main incentives for my current contract was that it would enable me to play Xbox of my phone as WiFi in my area is very poor across multiple providers and with this change it significantly limits what I am able to do

From what I read at the below link, UPnP is unlikely to help you anyway. You can tell this by the alternatives which it suggests that you put the Xbox in the DMZ or to forward ports from your router to your Xbox.

https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/connect-network/upnp-not-successful

By these suggestions, you can deduce that the service is intended to hit your Xbox directly from the internet but this is unlikely to be successful with the use of CGNAT.

Historically, ISPs have a pool of IPv4 addresses which they use to provide customers with a dynamic IP address. These IPv4 addresses are routable on the internet so other Xbox users can hit your device. Due to the shortage of IPv4 addresses, there has been a move to CGNAT where customers are provided with a non-routable address and many customers share the same IPv4 address going out to the internet so there is no hope of other servers hitting your Xbox because it will have no publicly routable IPv4 address.

You can make outbound connections and receive data back on that connection via NAT, but no inbound connection can be initiated to your Xbox because they will hit your exit IPv4 address but that gateway will not know which customer to send those packets to so will do whatever the firewall is configured to do (you may as well assume those packets are dropped as they will anyway not reach your router).

If you find any of the above to be false or you find some way to get around the obstacles which I have outline, I would be very happy to hear about the strategy as I'm well aware my knowledge is incomplete in this area. Good luck! 🤓

Hi, your mini WiFi device is substandard.

I cannot join party chats due to connectivity issues, how would I go about sorting it out?
