Can I put my unlimited data SIM card in a 5g router

Hi - we have only mobile data internet at our house due to poor wired internet speeds. We have a EE 4g router with an unlimited data access- however our speeds are barely 8mb download during the day and it’s often less than 2mb. As my wife is conducting video conferences frequently this is not working. It appears that we now have 5g in the area so can I buy a 5g router and put the existing router sim in it and get 5g? Or will the sim only pick up a 4 g signal no matter the router?

It'll depend on what plan you have on the existing SIM & possibly how long ago you bought it. Nowadays all EE contract SIMs come with a 4G/5G plan but not so long ago some EE SIMs had only a 4G plan.

Is it on contract or PAYG? As yet PAYG SIMs do not support 5G.
