10mbs unlimited data with poor reception

I have recently changed my mobile broadband sim to unlimited data with a 10 mbps limit. It seems that in areas of poor reception I now get no usable reception at all. 10mbps is fine for my needs in areas with good reception.

Does the 10mbps limit only apply when 10 mbps is possible or does it reduce data speed even when the maximum  attainable is below 10 mbps? Would I get better speeds in areas of poor reception with with limited data but no speed cap?

I have asked on the ee helpline but could not get a clear answer.

If the maximum attainable speed is below 10Mb/s, then a 10Mb/s cap will be immaterial.

@MikeB49  if you in a poor reception area, it’ll always be a poor reception area regardless of what tariff you’ve actually got for your data allowance.    You don’t get a better signal because of the data allowance if it’s a poor reception area it’s still a poor reception area.
