Do EE now do a credit check when upgrading as have changed how contracts work? So now you need a loan for the phone and a separate airtime contract? Been with EE for years.

For the new Flex Pay plans where you have a device credit agreement, yes this will be the case as EE need to be a responsible lender.

Otherwise, the traditional 24 month contracts with one combined cost are still available but these usually don't appear online when you're eligible for Flex Pay.

If you wanted to stay with this type of contract, you would need to call EE on 150 or go in-store and specifically state that you don't want Flex Pay and they will be able to process that type of plan for you.

Just note that this will look expensive compared to other providers and even EE's own Flex Pay deals as it is a shorter minimum term than the 36 months the industry has moved towards.
