When my contract ends in June, can I just walk away, cancel direct debit etc??

No, your contract never ends unless you explicitly give 30days cancellation notice or use a PAC. The logical consequence of a fixed-term contract ending is that your phone is automatically disconnected - imagine the complaints....
You need to give 30days cancellation notice regardless of whether you are within your minimum-term or not. Either that, or use a PAC/STAC - obtaining that from EE and giving it to another provider.
