Send emails from btinternet.com account when using third party broadband

I switched broadband provider to Voneus in April 2025. I still have an account with EE (and am under contract until late 2026). I aim to use my btinternet.com email account until my contract with EE expires.

If I try to send emails from my btinternet.com account whilst connected to Voneus broadband, I get various error messages:

Unable to verify account name or password.

Can't connect to the account : "my btinternet email address". Enter the password for user "my btinternet email address".

My outgoing SMTP settings are:

Outgoing Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com

Port: 465

SSL encryption: Enabled

Authentication: Password

When I connect using my existing EE router, I can send emails from btinternet.com without any problems.

I can still access my email via webmail (on a browser).

Can anybody offer me any advice? Many thanks.

@MartinEllis    I was able to send emails from my BTInternet email on my iPad earlier using the settings in the link I posted earlier - took a bit of manually adding in the password on the outgoing settings and changing the port to the one you have.

So it is not a general block, but likely to be specific to your internet provider. Do they have any firewall or parental control settings that you could tweak?

Hello @Mustrum  I'm pretty sure my SMTP settings are in line with the settings in the link you posted:

I'm not sure how I go about checking or tweaking any specific settings that my internet provider (Voneus) has.

@MartinEllis   your settings are fine as the work on EE. Using the same settings my iPad works on a non EE network.

Looking at Voneus it would appear to be limited to certain areas, gets good enough reviews but not a lot of technical info.

It would be worth going back to their technical support and letting them know the issues you are having, include the port details, and see if they have any firewall blocks or parental controls.

the other poster who has not bothered to see how things look at what settings are available on todays apps is not adding any help to the thread, and I have no idea why they do so.

Is this what you'd like to see from me? Capture.JPG

Not having a BT email addy I have used a GMail addy, which has the same email server port nos. & settings as BT. This is if  I were using IMAP for my incoming as you do but it would be much the same with POP3 incoming, You still need both an incoming server & a separate SMTP server & it cannot be omitted.Capture3.JPGCapture2.JPG

The email client could be any; it is just a presentation layer. The underlying email protocols are unchanged.

All outgoing mail has been successfully sent (& received) using the above settings over EE BB. I don't possess Voneus BB to be able to test it.

I note that you have backtracked from your original contention of using the outgoing port as 993 (IMAP) to 465 (SMTP.).

This was the only (small) item of yours I objected to but you kept harping on about it.

@XRaySpeX

Thank you for your reply. It's very helpful. Below is a screenshot of the server settings for my BTinternet account (when I'm connected through Voneus BB). If I connect through EE, the outgoing mail server connects normally.

@MartinEllis Link to what BT recommend settings wise!

BT Email server settings | BT Help

Thank you @JimM11 . The issue is with the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and my settings comply with BT's recommendations. Everything works fine if I connect through EE but not if I'm connected through Voneus. 😣

@MartinEllis Try port 587 see how it goes.

SMTP Settings for BT Internet Email

  • Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): mail.btinternet.com
  • Port: 587 (for TLS) or 465 (for SSL)
  • Encryption: Use SSL or TLS (recommended for security)
  • Authentication: Required
  • Username: Your full BT email address (e.g., yourname@btinternet.com)
  • Password: Your BT email password

Thanks again @JimM11 . I've swapped the SMTP setting to port 587 and it seems to be working! Hurrah! 😁
