Send emails from btinternet.com account when using third party broadband

I switched broadband provider to Voneus in April 2025. I still have an account with EE (and am under contract until late 2026). I aim to use my btinternet.com email account until my contract with EE expires.

If I try to send emails from my btinternet.com account whilst connected to Voneus broadband, I get various error messages:

Unable to verify account name or password.

Can't connect to the account : "my btinternet email address". Enter the password for user "my btinternet email address".

My outgoing SMTP settings are:

Outgoing Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com

Port: 465

SSL encryption: Enabled

Authentication: Password

When I connect using my existing EE router, I can send emails from btinternet.com without any problems.

I can still access my email via webmail (on a browser).

Can anybody offer me any advice? Many thanks.

@XRaySpeX I've now managed to check the Openreach Fibre Checker. See below. It seems full fibre broadband should be available within the next year.

Having said that, Voneus has installed a new full fibre network locally and that's what I now have. My contract is for 500Mbps.

@MartinEllis So if you have a FF500 Fibre connection with Voneus why are you not using that all the time, your answer just does not make any sense, yes have both but forget and park the EE up and use as a backup if needed! Understand you may be wishing/holding out for a OR Fibre delivery that may or may not even happen especially if an Altnet like you have is there and running. OR may just say stuff it not worth the bother!

@JimM11 You make a valid point! Thank you.

At the moment, we have the EE digital phone service. I need to arrange to switch this over to the Voneus equivalent digital phone service VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Then I think I can park up the EE broadband until the end of my contract.

I just want to be sure that everything is working properly with Voneus before I do so. I guess I need to suck it and see.
