SSID and Password Restrictions

I have used the same wifi SSID and password for decades by changing the configuration on all the routers I have had since the  BT Voyager 2000. I recently cancelled an order to upgrade to FTTP and Digital Voice because I found a screenshot of an EE Smart-Hub menu page which implied that there is a minimum password length of 14 characters. Posts in this forum imply this is not so.

I have no idea why the security of my wifi access would be any business of a service provider, but can anyone give me a definitive answer as to whether the SSID or minimum password length is restricted by EE?

On my Smart Hub Pro it tries to warn you if you set a password less than 16 characters but it does not stop you. Also for the SSID I just use Home which it happily accepts. However I did have issues with the compatible WiFi when trying to use an SSID with a hyphen in the name in that it kept giving me connected without internet warnings on my phone. I think the latter is a bug rather than a feature.

@JSM-100  The reply from @tnj is correct, just ignore and do as you please once you have it all setup as YOU require!

Just had one installed for FTTP.

Don't believe everything you read and let experience guide you.

Folks who have replied are correct. Do as you please after initial set up.

Many thanks for the replies. I can safely reinstate my FTTP order now!

@JSM-100 You sure can, just pay particular attention to what you are getting equipment wise with the upgrade that you are doing, plus any extenders etc or other addons that you require to have!

@JimM11  Yes, it's always a worry that a firmware "upgrade" will change things, but so long as it's possible to use my own router there will be away around it, just not so convenient.

We do seem to be heading back to the days when you couldn't use any equipment not supplied by the GPO.

@JSM-100 You can use whatever you want Router wise on an EE service connection as long as you can make it connect on the wan interface. EE just will not help when you have a problem as they only support there range which you cannot fault them for that!

No problem at all if they provide a standard interface and make that information freely available. I am not so sure about using Digital Voice with a non-EE router, though. Anyway, it looks as if the Hub provided will make any such complications unnecessary. 🤞
