Plugging in router before activation date

This may be a useless question but just checking before I go ahead and do it. 

Activation date was supposed to be today and have no idea how it missed everyone that Openreach workers go on strike today lol. 

Would it hurt to try to router with my current Virgin media BB just to test how its signal is etc? Or will it mess something up?

EE routers can't work on VM BB. They use diff infrastructure & systems. You could however:

• If you already have the BT phone socket or ONT installed, plug it into that & see if it's live.
• Use the EE on its own to test the WiFi around the house.

i have the VM router. could i just turn that router into a modem and use the EE one? 

what do you mean by plugging it into the BT phone socket? so i could just plug it into that see if i get internet? 

also what do you mean by using the EE router on its own? is that question an extension from plugging it into the socket? 

also another question i had, can I have the ONT/router elsewhere? different sources are saying no since the phone socket gets converted, some are saying its fine and the ONT can be moved elsewhere as it'll be connected externally to the fibre.

Sorry, I have no knowledge of VM routers & modems. I thought their routers were w/out a modem & their modem was somewhere in their cabling & socket. I suppose it wouldn't do any harm to connect the EE router & run it in Ethernet WAN mode.

You forget to give your background to your situation & it took me some time to remember that we had discussed that you are ordering FTTP from EE & awaiting its installation. I take it now that the ONT hasn't been installed. Ignore what I said about BT sockets as I did not know then whether you were asking about ADSL, FTTC or FTTP BB.

By "on its own" I mean freestanding, connected to nowt, just to test the WiFi.

On installation day you should get ample opportunity to discuss with the engineer on how to get the connection into the home & the siting of the ONT. The position of any existing BT phone socket is irrelevant.

great. i might as well try the router in modem mode as i dont think anything bad will happen. 

 and yeah, ONT hasnt been installed. it's weird really as it was booked for this date even though knowledge of them striking was known a good week and a bit before . wish I booked earlier or for tomorrow lol but alas hindsight is 20/20.

after researching more modem mode wont work

the way ur supposed to do it is via setting up the second router as an AP and idk if changing ip and disabling the firewall will do anything prior to the activation may hinder it. 

i'll probably just leave it and test it on its own.
