New Smart Hub Plus gives connected devices odd names

Trying to get to grips with my new "Smart hub plus" router (App version 1.13.1, firmware r1.35).

Connectivity is excellent. The user interface I'm having a number of issues with.

For example my ancient Acer laptop shows under "My Network" (via http://192.168.1.254) with a really odd name: "Vendor: Liteon Technology". Now my previous hub would have allowed me to edit that name (or remove the device). However I read here that "the EE App" would be required for that.

So having installed "the App" I was indeed able to rename to "Acer". The change however did not affect the name on "My Network", which still showed "Vendor: Liteon Technology".

So I foolishly(?) told the App to "forget this device". And of course it did. The laptop still connects just fine, still shows under "My Network", and still with the wrong name.

Q. Can I at least get "the App" to un-forget the device, come back everything is forgiven etc? I tried obvious re-boots, reconnects etc (everything short of factory reset). Having been told to forget a device actually seems to be more like a filter on displaying said device. Can this be undone?

(I'm trying to keep the question simple, but for the record there are actually multiple devices I'd like to rename for a number of reasons)

@labrat128 It will re-appear sometime, do not worry about it, naming mostly does not work correctly.

The router assigns names to devices of its own accord based on their MAC addys. The app is supposed to allow you to rename them.

If you think I helped please feel free to hit the "Thumbs Up" button below.

To phone EE CS: Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586 - Option 1 for Mobile Phone & Mobile Broadband or Option 2 for Home Broadband & Home Phone

ISPs: 1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up > 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB > 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB > 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU > 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU > 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC > 2014: EE 20 Meg WBC > 2020: EE 40 Meg FTTC > 2022:EE 80 Meg FTTC SoGEA > 2025 EE 150 Meg FTTP

Understood, and thank you.

But having told the app to forget the device I was playing about with - can I get the app to list it again? (Said device is still connected and still shows on the Web interface)

@labrat128  The easiest way to get it back is to forget the connection via the laptop and reset it back up again.

@JimM11  I’ve not had any issues/problems renaming my devices, I rename them and it sticks.

@Chris_B You can do what you like on the app, its ok, soon as you look at the router web not a thing has changed. or something may change, what about devices the router takes as a mac address for name?

I can confirm this - renamed successfully on the app, the laptop name remained unchanged on the web.

However... I did exactly the same rename on a couple of Android devices, and that was mirrored on the web.

It's just so... inconsistent. The previous Hub had some quirks, but at least with only one interface (the web) you knew where you were 🙂

Anyway thank you Jim - I shall wait a couple of days and see if things sync.

@labrat128 As you say very inconsistent in operation, would be better if you could at least rename with the web interface, but that's not going to happen, just get used to finding the mac address, associate that with the device, best way, just one of the oops that you may come across as you plow through it all.

@JimM11  I’ll have to look in to that.   I personally don’t use the web interface to know the device name.

@Chris_BThanks, it is just one of those things, i am opposite use web as much as i can, not a mobile or app user for the router, pretty sure it is more device orientated so just put it down to one off those oops but work arounds are OK for me.👍
