EE broadband smart hub plus 2.4GHz 5.0GHz

birdfoodeater

hi,

i can see some of the devices are connecting to 2.4GHz and some to 5.0GHz

but on my wi-fi option, there’s only 1 and doesn’t specify 2.4 or 5.0

i need to use 2.4 connection to set up my air purifier… and not sure why my macbook is connected to 2.4 instead of 5.0.

is there anyway i can split it and have option of choosing which one to connect?

my broadband is Smart Hub Plus

Morning @XRaySpeX .

Sorry, but some of the security names I used were like generic (between different routers) or my shorthand.

1. New hub set up

In a nutshell, when I was initially setting up my devices with the new router/hub, one of them was a 2015 Sony TV that is in a bedroom. I'm pretty sure that it was connected on the main network (and thus not on the compatible network).

2. EE chat Guide factory resets my hub

On contacting EE by chat explaining that fine transfers over WiFi between two PCs is bringing the whole internet down (hub is actually prob fine - one PC connected by ethernet, 2nd PC nearby connected by WiFi, file transfer speed too high to allow any room for internet usage over WiFi), the EE Guide performed a factory reset (I naively thought that they were doing some QoS tweak or something to help with the file transfers rendering the internet as being unusable).

This time, on trying to connect the Sony TV to the main network, the main network SSID has no padlock on it in the the available list of networks.

I eventually work out that the TV must not be compatible with the WPA3 protocol, so I changed the "security type" from "WPA3-Personal" to "WPA3-Personal-Transitional", thus allowing WPA-2 devices to connect.

3. Reset to recommended

There is a "Reset to recommended" option, highlighted in black, on the network settings page.

I was interested to see what this would set the "security settings" to: it set them to ""WPA3-Personal-Transitional" for the main network, and disabled the compatible network.

Upshot

It seems that WPA3-Personal-Transitional must have been the default out the box for the 2015 Sony TV to connect to the main network at the outset.

After the factory reset I'm sure that the setting was "WPA3-Personal" (I could've changed it myself somehow, but I don't recall doing this).

Selecting "Reset to recommended" settings results in the "WPA3-Personal-Transitional" being applied.

I just cannot be sure that "WPA3-Personal-Transitional" was the original setting on my hub but with the Sony TV connecting it must have been (unless I connected it to the compatible network and I have now forgotten!).

Additional

It would seem that I would have to connect the Sony TV to the compatible network (at 2.4FHz), if "WPA3-Personal" is selected for the main network.

Hi @JimM11 .

I just assumed that the factory reset would give me exactly the same default settings as those that applied when I first used the hub (assuming that there were no major firmware updates that were installed on my hub that were temporarily lost due to the reset).

If you get the chance, please take a look at my reply that I just sent to @XRaySpeX .

@Dabmonger : I agree with that mostly.

  • The Main network's default for when you 1st received the SH+ must have been "WPA3-Personal", the same as for a factory reset. That's why it's called a "factory reset". It sets the router back to all the settings the router came with as new. To have the TV to connect from the beginning you must have 1st either manually changed it to "WPA3-Personal-Transitional" or have "Reset to recommended".
  • Yes, "Reset to recommended" does indeed change it to "WPA3-Personal-Transitional" which your TV is happy with.

What is the f/ware level of your SH+?

But here's the thing @XRaySpeX , I definitely didn't change any security settings prior to the factory reset. I didn't even know until very recently that WPA3-personal-transitional was a thing!

Perhaps I reset to recommended, but I have no recollection of doing that. Perhaps I used the compatible network, but I again have no recollection.

And I didn't know about the compatible network at the start.

I take your point, and it's hard to disagree, but it's still a bit of a mystery to me (given that the Sony TV was set up from the very start).

As for the firmware version:

r3.8.24-R-1531355-PROD-83002

Oh, well, @Dabmonger , you'll just have to take it as a learning experience.

A learning experience, yes, with the most important thing being that all is working (for now at least!) 🙂

Btw how I remember Freeserve 48K Dial-Up. The fun, the noise, the slow speeds!

In Edinburgh, I think I may well have gone straight from dial-up to Telewest (Virgin Media) fibre.

Freeserve - that's a blast from the past alright. I'd like to say that those were the days, but they really really weren't!!

They wrote better s/ware even if it was slower & they didn't have the supercomputers of today.😉.

I assume you do mean software, and not spyware 😉 lol

Just for your info, in case you may not already have been aware of this annoyance ...

When naming a network, in the EE app you cannot use a point ("."), but you can in the Hub Manager.

I was surprised when I wasn't able to include "2.4GHz" in the compatible router name using the app.

Apologies if this has been known about for ages, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.
