EE Wifi showing as open network

Hi,

I have read a few articles but none really answered my question. So my router is transmitting the open EE WiFi channel - I have opted out of EE WiFi but it’s still here despite opting out and resetting the router etc - there’s no physical settings in routers firmware to disable it. It’s really frustrating as I have opted out immediately yet it’s back again. Any advice?

Thanks

Adrian

An idea: Now you've opted out, please try opting in & see if the EE WiFi for your router's BSSID reappears. Then you can opt-out again.

Will give it a go...

@XRaySpeX - I opted back in towards the tail-end of last week and that's what's reflected on the EE website. At the time of writing, there is still no re-emergence of the EE WiFi SSID on the hub in question.

I wonder if there be gremlins? 🤔

@bobpullen : I'm sure it is. It must be the intention of BT/EE that in exchange for sharing your router on the public EE WiFi network you have the right to use that public network for free & conversely.

When my SH+ had the 3.8.11 f/ware upgrade (1/7) I never noticed if it was transmitting EE WiFi SSID, but I'll assume it was as y'all say so. However a few days later (4/7) you showed where to find the EE WiFi opt in/out option & I played with it a bit & toggled it back & forth a coupla times leaving it opted-in. On the same day, as everyone was saying that the SH+ with that f/ware was transmitting EE WiFi SSID I looked for it on mine but couldn't find it anywhere. Hence I was then  adamant that it didn't transmit EE WiFi & asked you to do that test to confirm..

So, it looks like we've sussed it, at least temporarily 🙂 . You can have the right to use the public EE WiFi network for free but not have your SH+ participate in it if you 1st opt-out of it & then opt back in & leave it opted-in.

If you think I helped please feel free to hit the "Thumbs Up" button below.

To phone EE CS: Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586 - Option 1 for Home Broadband & Home Phone or Option 2 for Mobile Phone & Mobile Broadband

ISPs: 1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up > 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB > 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB > 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU > 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU > 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC > 2014: EE 20 Meg WBC > 2020: EE 40 Meg FTTC > 2022:EE 80 Meg FTTC SoGEA > 2025 EE 150 Meg FTTP

@bobpullen Would that not be a way to do it, have the EE WiFi working and connecting to a hotspot that is EE/BT done via your account access, but remove the facility completely from your Router as you do NOT wish for it to be an actual Hotspot provider for others to access.

@JimM11 - yes, a happy consequence of these findings may be that you can do exactly that. That said, I'm sure I read a post around these parts recently that stated a customer was still able to connect to/use EE WiFi hotspots despite having successfully opted out and stopped the SSID broadcast on their own router. Perhaps the entitlement logic isn't working at all 🤷

I've opted out again, left it an hour or so, and then opted back in to see if a second attempt yields different results. I can't imagine it's intentional that the SSID is not being re-enabled after opting back in.

I too have done this. When I first joined the EE WiFi was broadcasting, I opted out 2 months ago on the site and then back In I was still able to join public hot spots but has ceased broadcasting from my hub.

Apparently this is about people creating hotspots via their personal hub so they can become hotspot providers for others and everyone, including themselves can join each others hotspots. I had no idea about this, I just noticed that I have a non-password protected Wifi from my hub. How bizarre! Who in their sane mind would want that??? Especially when cyber attacks and data theft is all time high. Let my neighbors and any random people just use my hub for their entertainment? OMG EE... Why did you opt me into this mess??? NOBODY WANTS THIS!!!!

And the coincidentally interesting part is how hidden the opt-out page is for this. It took me a whole afternoon to find it and it seems I am not the only one. I am pretty sure it's intentional.

My broadband has been horrid, always disconnects several times a day, and on top of that this shady hotspot sharing hidden scheme... I will never buy any product from EE ever again. I thought Virgin was bad with outages every few months, well, EE is certainly a good contender in that aspect. NEVER AGAIN.

@R0mp3r Then get the EE WiFi removed, it will disappear from your EE Hub, and stop EE Account holders from using it!

Say which EE Hub you are using from the link below.
