EE Upgrade - Good and the Bad.

Just thought I'd spread the info on an upgrade to wifi 7 Pro recently.

I was a BT to EE wifi6 originally, and within a few weeks went to wifi 7 pro for the same price. I was pleased about this as I wanted the latest tech around the house.

After removing all the wifi6 hub and 3 extenders and replaced with the new bigger hardware, set it up as I needed.

For me I retained my TPLINK router on my LAN to enable DHCP services. I didnt want to have to redefine fixed reservations. This was fine, disabling the DHCP service on the wifi 7 hub/router.

The extenders, was a slightly different matter as I had to position them in so called strong signal areas, which was a challenge. One I provided with 1Gb backhaul via RJ45 cable and this works well. I have three extenders across a three floor House, and it maybe the fact that three aren't needed.

Testing the wifi speed was easy enough using speedtest and the speeds are excellent, using a 900Mbit cable FTTP, I can acheive 850 Mbit throughput via the extenders maximum, and 300 Mbit at a minimum in all places around the home. What does surprise me is that the 2.4Ghz wifi signal is not very strong. The previous kit was stronger as it was available in my garage.

Using ethernet and switches for my fixed connections has been fine. Most are 1Gbit connections, so no issues there.

Using the wifi using the newer security WPA3 has been an issue though.

I have around 90 devices, probably 75 are wifi internet of things (IOT) for home automations running on the older 2.4Ghz wifi.

What I found was compatibility issues. In order to make the devices work I adopted the old wifi name and password and 95% of the devices attached properly, no problem.

Some of the indoor light bulbs would not stay connected to the 2.4Ghz wifi. Usung Home assistant I was able to monitor the constant connect/disconnect of these wifi devices.

What I did was to introduce a wifi IOT 2.4.Ghz band on my TP-Link router and connect them to that instead using older WPA2 encryption. This worked and all of them have been stable since.

All in all I'm glad that I went over to EE. My old BT Superhub 2 wasn't so super after having it since 2019 and it was replaced twice in 2025. The old BT black wifi discs were slow using wifi 5 from 8 years or so ago.

Now with wifi 7 the speeds are way better than the fixed 100mbit ethernet for the likes of Sky Stream pucks, so I'm able to do away with the LAN cables for those, and they have been rock solid on wifi so far.

I hope this might assist those thinking of transfering to Wifi 7 kit, or away from the very old BT gear!
