broadband disconnecting on bright box 1 router when using the landline phone

Discovered a new problem today. When picking up the landline phone handset the router starts to flash amber on broadband lamp (2nd lamp down) and internet is disconnected. Replace the handset and connection is restored and lamp returns to solid green. Any ideas? Thanks, Roger.

You still haven't said yet if the extension socket works with the faceplate on the master socket removed.

If it does then this would be an internal wiring issue which may be chargeable if Openreach sort it out for you.

It doesn't, just the same on dangly filter or with face plate on. I have been told to contact CS and call them out again.

The Openreach engineer attended yesterday. As according to "Murphy's Law" the phone was working fine and it did not affect the broadband connection when the handset was lifted. It had of course been cutting off the internet connection anytime it was lifted for the two previous days. The engineer said that's OK.

He checked the line and said there were some detectable errors on the line when my phone is connected but using his test phone there were no errors. He thus concluded that my corded phone (an original vintage British Telecom approved STC BT Viscount red slim-line telephone handset) was causing the problem. I then pointed out that he hadn't pressed the hash key before dialling his test number as this is required on this set to produce the required dial tone (otherwise it is not generated). He tested using the hash key first and said it was OK.

He suggested I replace the phone with cordless type phone(s).

Currently the phone is working fine and no problems. Will see how it goes.

Thanks.

Thanks for the update, @rogera1.

Fingers crossed it's sorted.

It must be an ancient phone if it doesn't a Tone Dialling/Pulse Dialling switch or is Tone Dialling anyway as all modern phones are.

Yes, it was supplied by BT to replace the previous standard BT handset issued when the line was installed in 1975 and has the new option of a # button which will enable the phone to be used on the "new tone dial system" that was to be introduced in the near future. We automatically precede all calls with the # button but of course the engineer yesterday did not know about this. We'll see how things go. Have a good day.
