I upgraded from a pixel 3a to a 5 and it didn't come with a new sim- was I right to put the 3a sim in the new phone?

Not only right but the simplest. Your existing SIM would have been changed to the upgraded plan.
To phone EE CS: Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586 - Option 1 for Mobile Phone & Mobile Broadband or Option 2 for Home Broadband & Home Phone
