I was sent a new sim with my upgraded phone but the new sim has still not been activated after 24 hours, so now I don’t have any connection when I leave my house as both seem to not be working now

Welcome to the community,
You do not need to use the new SIM card, you can use your old SIM card if it still works, EE often send a new one out, just in case there is a problem, the original one should still work, hope this helps.
