Return Router - charge?

pete651
Explorer

Hi, I've recently recontracted with EE broadband and am getting a new router sent.

In the dispatch email it mentions to return my 'faulty router' otherwise I will be charged on my next bill.

Is this a new policy? I'd hoped to keep the old one as a spare.

Thanks

Hi @pete651,

Welcome to the EE Community. 🙂

If you have been asked to return the router, you'll need to send it back to avoid any charges.

Thanks

James

What do you mean by recontracted? Were you already with EE B & have just upgraded your contract OR are you coming back to EE BB from another ISP?

Have you reported old router as faulty?

If you think I helped please feel free to hit the "Thumbs Up" button below.

Hi,

I was already with EE and came to end of contract. Took out a new deal & contract. At the time advised I could have a new router and thought would be worthwhile as my current one was well used. Never mentioned it was faulty and wasn't advised the old one would need to be returned. Just saw this in the email sent confirming dispatch of the new router.

It's not the end of the world it it has to go back, just didn't realise this was policy as never had to send a router back before.

Hi @pete651 ,

You may want to double check which Terms and Conditions apply to you. You may be at a disadvantage for sticking with your previous provider as if you changed annually between different OpenReach resellers, you could potentially accumulate a new router every year from service providers who do not require return of equipment.

It's mainly Virgin Media I know who mandate return of their equipment as it can be used for nothing else (mainstream).

I can well understand that you might regard the router as your property, and EE may well have let you take it away if you had switched provider, depending on whether or not they have informed you in advance the property remains theirs as per the below. It would be a good thing to clarify the below.

If the service provider has not told you otherwise, it may be that you own the old router and should not be returning it as faulty. If the service provider said you could have a new router and did not mandate return of your old router at the time, I feel they need to perform their verbal contract and not materially alter it to the unfavourable, different contract which is a breach of the original verbal contract.
