I’m looking at taking out a new contract on EE but via a 3rd party. Am I able to keep my number if I stay on the same network?

EE won't port nos between contracts. So you need to 1st port your existing no to another network's PAYG using a PAC from EE & then in reverse port it back to your new contract. This will also have the effect of cancelling your old contract.
You could alternatively "upgrade" your old contract to PAYG & then ask EE to transfer the no to your new contract.

If I Port it to another network can I Port it straight away back to EE?
I tried upgrading but the deal was no where near as good as what was being offered.

Depends on other network's rules. They may insist you wait a while.

i still be able to then keep my existing number?

Yes, that's what an upgrade is. You keep your no. & just switch contracts & plans.

I have bought a new phone with new plan still in EE but via carphone w, still to months to finish old contract. Wanted to pay it and switch old number to new plan asap. Firstly when I chat with EE support they told me it was possible and asked to call Billing service. Talked to another operator and I was told thats not possible. Really confused and dissapointed...

Good Morning @bluehiccup.
Welcome to the EE Community.
I am sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
It is not possible for our agents to port a number from EE to EE.
Katie 🙂

@bluehiccup : That's right, EE won't do it for you but you can do it for yourself by using the method given in https://community.ee.co.uk/t5/Porting-your-number/How-to-keep-my-number/m-p/894179/highlight/true#M6...
