A few years back I travelled to Portugal and used my EE phone completely free (I wasn’t charge anything for calls or data), it was all included. But this time round I’m being told EE now charge even in the EU? Is this the case? I certainly they use to be free especially in the EU

Since 7th July 2021 roaming charges have been reintroduced. These charges apply to all Pay Monthly plans with the exception of the following:
All customers must remember to text ROAMING to 150 before travelling to ensure the ability to connect to foreign networks is enabled before leaving the UK.

If you last re-contracted before July 7th 2021, then you continue to have inclusive roaming within the EU.
If you last re-contracted since this date, then the base position is that EU-roaming is subject to a flat £2.59/day charge for inclusive use of your UK allowances. This can be reduced by choosing a weekly or 12-day pass.
Some plans include add-ons which provide for inclusive EU-roaming thus overriding the requirement for a pass.

Does anyone know how to find out when my plan started? Without having to phone through to EE?

Go to the EE App > Manage > Mobile & SIMs > look for "Contract Term" and "Start:" - The date will be shown here.
