I am in contract with an eSim and unable to receive any OTP type SMSs whilst in Australia. Any idea why? I will use a local sim for data but need the SMS for banking etc.

Hi,

not sure, but I don’t think so.

Can you make or receive calls? Can you do anything with it other than over WiFi?

I’ve not tried anything yet as I am in Australia. I don’t want to be hit by the fees.

Can you try and be more constructive in your advice.

Hi @Grapeel11

What @XRaySpeX is trying to do is to diagnose if the free Roaming facility is enabled on your account to enable you to connect to foreign networks. This is separate from any billing addons or data roaming settings on your phone.

In order to receive texts abroad roaming needs to be enabled on your account, there should not be a charge for texts received and you will not be charged as long as you disable data roaming and don't make any calls or texts.

This usually needs to be done before leaving the UK by texting ROAMING to 150 and then GOING. If you have not done this, you would need to contact EE to get them to enable roaming for you so that you can connect to the local networks and receive your texts. You do not need to add any roaming packages or chargeable addons, just enable your phone to Roam.

If you download Skype you can call EE for free, the number in @XRaySpeX's signature should allow you to get through.

I haven't attempted to advise you yet but I will now. I was just trying to ascertain exactly what state your roaming ability is in.

As you are on contract, did you activate roaming on your EE a/c before you left UK by texting ROAMING to 150? Having a roaming billing add-on doesn't of itself activate roaming on your a/c. Having roaming activated on your EE a/c, not just on your device, is crucial to using your contract SIM abroad.

Often just rebooting the phone is the simple remedy. Also try selecting a network manually rather than auto.

Otherwise if you are on contract you need to call CS to get your roaming activated. Try calling CS on the Freephone no. in my sig. on Skype over WiFi. It should be free.

Thank you, Matt. I’ll give this a go. I do have roaming enabled by EE as I’ve recently used it in Europe.

Roaming can be enabled on an EU-only basis or a global one

I’m shocked that EE are making this so difficult. It’s not at all intuitive.

Really, I am not surprised why so many people give them a poor write up.
