If you hadn't used it for a while your PAYG SIM had probably already gone into hibernation & the topping up was too late.
When did you last use it for a chargeable action? EE PAYG SIMs are deactivated after 6 months of non-use. You then have a further 3 months to call EE to reactivate it before it is lost completely.
You needed to make a chargeable action like making a chargeable call or text, topping up or buying a Pack or Add-on, not just using your mins, texts or data from your pack.

Thanks for your reply. My old SIM is probably deactivated in that case. I have a new EE SIM though. Do you know how I can transfer my credit (as I was misled by the above article) and old number, on to the new sim?

PAYG credit is not transferable but you could call CS to try & transfer your old no. to the new SIM. It might not be possible as it might have already been deactivated.
