Rest of the world minutes add on query

Hi,

Currently on holiday in Barbados and thought it would be handy to buy the £3 for 30 days rest of the world add-on, only to find it doesn't work when I've tried to call family here; no connection, unable to text. Had to bto be done via WiFi connection. Really frustrating. Am I suppose to have roaming switched on? Help!
