I don't usually post on forums but my experience with EE has been pretty ridiculous.
I have been an EE customer for mobile phone since roughly October 2019. I have also been a BT/EE broadband/tv customer since October 2022.
Last night I decided I wanted to upgrade to the new S24 Ultra so I went and did that. I am 2 months away from my contract ending. They notified me that I had to ring the self service helpline to discuss the details of the upgrade. When I rang up they told the reason why I had to ring up is due to the fact that I checked the box where my phone is damaged and that I had to pay a fee.
I asked him how much was the fee and he stated £500. Like seriously? The phone has a small crack on the top of the screen and you're seriously saying I have to pay a £500 fee. A used phones in great condition is £300 online for and S22 Ultra.
Yes, it's true I could go and pay someone to fix the screen but that's besides the point. The reason why I pay so much money for my phone contract is for the convenience. I don't want to have to worry how much data, or minutes, or texts I'm using in any part of the world. I just want to have a service that works, and makes my life less stressful.
It's an actual joke, that this is the EE policy. Honestly, I am just going to let all my contracts run out, BT TV and broadband included and just go somewhere else. I am paying £350 for the TV/Broadband my wife's phone and my phone. For what? To get shafted whenever I want a stress free experience.

You mention you are still within your minimum term, I suspect this means there may be a trade-in requirement for your current phone under the early-upgrade rules.
Damaged phones would come with additional costs under this criteria.
