Confused about upgrade

I have been told I cam upgrade my phone as the phone part is all paid off. I have just taken out a new data plan so I have 16 months left on that. If I upgrade, am I still paying for my original data for 16 months or does the new data plan take over the old contract? I really don't want to be paying 2 data plans!

Alsp, when I go on EE site I can buy a new sim free phone and get much better deal than if I go through the upgrade part. So is there anything stopping me just buying the phone as a "new customer"?

As long us you upgrade your existing airtime plan, & not take out a new contract, you will keep your no. & replace your existing contract.

Alternatively, you could buy a SIM-Free phone & just put your existing SIM in it on  your existing contract.
