Logon does not work with mobile phone number

I've had an account since this was Orange, I log on with the mobile phone number. Every couple months I go in and top up the account as it is pay as you go. Today it tells me the mobile phone number is an invalid way to logon and that I need an email address as a username. I register an account using an email address and go to add the mobile phone number. It tells me that an account already exists with that phone number. What??? Have no idea how I can now top up my mobile, any ideas? Thanks

Online access to Orange a/c's has been removed for some years. In fact you should have been moved to an EE 3G a/c.
