Does PAYG SIM cards expire?

I live abroad, but will be back in the UK in a few weeks. I have an old SIM card that I was trying to add a subscription pack to, but I keep getting an error message so I'm assuming the SIM has been deactivated. If this is the case, is there any way to reactivate it, as I'd like to keep the same number if its possible.

@nashbywade PAYG sim cards going to hibernation after 179 days you then  get a further six months to call customer services to get it reactivated if it is been over nine months, then unfortunately the Sim card is fully deactivated and you cannot use it again and the number has gone for good.

To contact EE Customer Services dial 150 From your EE mobile or 0800 956 6000 from any other phone.
