I purchase and use a Thai sim when I am in Thailand with no problems,...my question is regarding the first few hours when I arrive in the country, until I buy a sim, I can never seem to use my phone, I suspect its down to some settings, being an old wrinkly I am not that clever, can anyone help so that I can use my phone the minute I arrive in Bangkok August time? TIA

As it is not in EU, you cannot use your usual UK allowances there but will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/roaming-costs/countries/thailand .
As you are on contract, remember to text ROAMING to 150 before you leave UK to check roaming is enabled on your account.
To phone EE CS: Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586 - Option 1 for Mobile Phone & Mobile Broadband or Option 2 for Home Broadband & Home Phone

@bazwal Is this on contract or PAYG ? If it’s on PAYG you need credit on your account to pay for calls/text. You also best to restart the device once you get there.
If your on contract have you enabled roaming on your EE account?
