My son has gone to France today and forgot to set his phone up for roaming. He now has no service out there. Is there anything he can do to get this put on?

Welcome to the community,

He will need to go into settings, either via the My EE App or logging in online into his account and then check whether he can enable roaming, call abroad and premium calls. If he is unable, he will have to ring customer service, which he can do for free using Skype:

Is he on contract or PAYG?

If he's on contract it's not just a matter of setting his phone up for roaming but setting up his EE a/c for roaming as @Schockwave suggested.
