I am a regular visitor to Spain with no previous communication issues with my contract. Last week in Spain I had data, I could text but I could not call any numbers either in or out of Spain, my phone was set on roaming and I have not changed anything from last month when I was there, I do not understand what was up? I will need this sorted out before my next visit, I can't get in touch with EE.

If you've used your phone abroad previously, then there's no reason for anything on your account to have changed.
Standard advice if you have issues making calls abroad in this situation, is to toggle flight mode and try manually connecting to a different local network.
