If data roaming on my mobile is switched off can I still be charged when abroad

Yes, you could be charged for calls made & received and texts sent. Where are you (going)?

Data roaming OFF only prevents you using data while roaming. Calls & texts don't use data.

@Edwardblackburn  Data roaming is just the ability to use data abroad so if it’s off you have no data but you could still be connected to the roaming network for calls/texts. So yes you could still be charged for making calls or  sending a text.     

Your best option is to keep airplane mode enabled so you don’t connect to a roaming network.  

To contact EE Customer Services dial 150 From your EE mobile or 0800 956 6000 from any other phone.

Charges are incurred when you make or receive calls (voice roaming), send text messages (text roaming) or use mobile data (data roaming) whilst roaming on foreign networks.

Receiving texts is free globally.
