How to prevent retrieving voicemail charges when abroad

Hi,

I am trying to figure out how I have  been charged for retrieving a voicemail message whilst abroad as I use visual voicemail?  There is nothing in my device call history which suggests I called voicemail.  So how have I done this? Thanks.

@may755  Even with visual voicemail you are retrieving a voicemail.    Visual voicemail just breaks down each voicemail so you can select which ones you want to listen to instead of having to listen to all of them in order. 

Your device phone records don’t list when you call your voicemail.   

The best way to stop this happening is to turn off voicemails when you go abroad

Oh I see. I just assumed it just downloads it using data.
