is there a way of turning off voicemail while you are in Canada or the USA without incurring text message charges? I know I should have texted VM off to 150 before I left the UK, but I forgot.

The most you can probably do is to set your conditional diverts away from the VM number, and hope the autodiverts don't kick in. I suspect they might.
