one site shows loads of red blobs and another shows spikes in outage but nothing mentioned on EE website !!

Where are you seeing this information? Have you checker the status of your area on our network status checker?

Please also try restarting your phone.

restarted and restarted etc.
various websites says EE have outages,
your's says northing or not admitting anything, but if anyone knows about
EE outages surely you should.

Tried your checker, eventually got in, but appears phone selection is
limited and excludes my cell phone - so not very helpful as I'm sure you
will agree.

Third party websites are not usually reliable for local service outages, and should be ignored.

The exact choice of device is not essential to use the EE status checker, just choosing the closest equivalent is fine. The tool then gives you the option to "register for updates" and also "report a problem" as appropriate.
