It says 5G but no 5G frequency which means it's downloading from 4G and slow

So I have a 5G router, Huawei CPE Pro 2 and couple of days ago I was getting good download speeds using 5G and all of a sudden the speed went down and became slow.

I checked the settings of my router to see if it's getting any 5G frequency but it's not.

The unit has full 5G 5 bars, but no frequency which means it's not getting any 5G data.

I can't upload any pictures to show you because it's not letting me add it to this post.

Are there any issues with 5G currently?huawei cpe pro 2.PNG

@EssexBoyEE  Hopefully you haven't forgotten about me.

Another update:  I have ordered a brand new CPE Pro 2, unmodified.  I will see if it reports the same issue.  I very much doubt it.

@EssexBoyEE another update.  I managed to get a Vodafone 5G sim and I plugged it in the router and 5G works (although horrible speed on n1) which tells me the router is fine.  The issue lies with EE.

Possibly, but not necessarily, your now using and testing a totally different Network, different Coverage on both 4G and 5G, different 5G parameters and most probably different Cell Mast locations.

Looking at the Coverage in your location Vodafone seems to be a bit more advanced in 5G Coverage over EE, in fact your EE 5G Coverage at your location, seems to be in slightly 5G fringe areas, in as much you seem to edge of the 5G Mast Transmitters.

Interestingly your on Vodafone 5G your pulling in 5G Band n1 (2100mhz), rather than the normal Band n78 (3500mhz) which if you refer back to my previous post about your 5G Only Antenna being a Full 5G Antenna but only for the 3500mhz Band, so again using Vodafone as a test doesn't really prove or rule out any possible Antenna issues or there directions.

If your using Vodafone's 4G+(5G Band n1 over Band n78) then I would expect a lot lower overall Speeds, very simular to what you are getting in your Speed Test, as Band n78 is the really the one you want for good 5G Speeds because of its available Bandwidth (I believe Voda are currently using 40 and or 50Mhz on n78) where's if its offering Band n1 instead of n78, the n1 2100Mhz Band is a shared 4/5G reused Band so the Bandwidth is going to be quiet a lot less Bandwidth and hence a lot lower Speed.

Same Deal goes for EE, EE also use 5G Band n78 on EE is currently 40Mhz, so again good Speeds under the right Signal conditions, again EE also use 5G Band n28 (700mhz) which also a very small Bandwidth so again not going to be the same High Speeds compared to n78, which was made me possibly believe when you put the Router Sim into your iPhone you may have been getting a lower Speed on 5G because of it connecting to Band n28.

@EssexBoyEE What do you recommend now?  I'm confused with all those n1, n78, etc.

If it helps, I swapped the Bluespot 5G only antenna for a Poynting one that supports 0-3800Mhz, it picked up 5G signal but still no frequency.

Go with Vodafone or stick with EE?  At the moment, EE 4G is giving me around 80Mbps download and Vodafone 5G or 4G is giving me around 50Mbps.

If you say Vodafone is more advanced in my area, should I try Vodafone and point the external antennas towards the Voda mast?  ( I was with Vodafone before, even pointing it to the mast didn't help with speeds, I could never connect to Voda's 3800Mhz 5G).  But if I drive a mile towards the centre of the town, I get 300Mbps+ download on Voda 5G.

So here is another question.

I have the following equipment and both EE 5G and Voda 5G are available.  What should I do to get the best speeds?  ( I have just rennovated my house, everything is smart including bulbs, cameras, TV plus I work from home so I need fast download speeds, at least 200Mbps+ )

  • Huawei CPE Pro 2 modified with 8 antenna ports
  • 2 x 4G/5G Antennas Poynting XPOL-2-5G
  • 1 x 5G only Antenna Bluespot Mini
  • Ethernet all across the house (WIFI limitation doesn't apply)

@EssexBoyEE Well guess what?  I managed to get an Android 5G phone and installed NetMonster and here you go:

It's in the nature of mobile networks that there will always be local coverage differences even if particular operators tend to perform better in most areas - also 5G is still relatively young and rollout is at an early stage.

The n78 type numbers that are referred to, are the band numbers. 4G & 5G services are delivered over different frequency bands, all of which have different radio characteristics and are better at different functions. n78, as an example, refers to 5G-service on the 3400-3500Mhz band.

What you should do for your data provision, needs to be what suits you best. New sites are being continually built, new techs and bands added to existing ones, and software-optimisation is an ongoing process.

All meaning the best network in a given location now, may not necessarily be the case in the future.

@Ar5had07 Ive just seen another post where your saying you have just ordered another 5G Router, exactly the same Model that you already have which doesn't come with External Antenna options, even though you have 3 lots of 4/5G External Antennas at your disposal, I dont quiet understand where your were going with that one.

Your now also trying compare and consider EE and Vodafone Networks for best speed options although you still haven't really solved the current issue that seemed to be working fine a few days back, you seem to be jumping about all over the place, hope you dont mind me saying this my friend but I think you need to stop, stand back, take a deep breath, and come up with a plan on the best way forward and try and solve the issue you didnt have previously, the Huawei Pro 2 Routers are not cheap the 3 lots of 5G Antennas you have are not cheap, so it the way I see it is you've thrown some cash at all this so it would be nice to get the Setup working as well as can be expected and maybe with a few tweaks here and there with some possible improvements.

If the issue you have is not within your own Setup, then Ive got my suspensions on what the problem could be in your Area, but if Im to be totally honest I think your going to struggle with the latter, so it will be better that you can eliminate all possible causes first within your Setup.

On your modified Router side I still struggling a bit on the Aerial Configuration thats been done to it, in particular on the CA and MiMo side, but I need to do a bit more Homework on that one first.

That's because we thought the problem was with the antennas and mods on the router.  So I ordered an unmodded one to see if it happens on it, and was gonna return it after.  Just to eliminate it's the hardware.  Okay's let's concentrate on what I have right now.  Sorry if I was jumping all over the place.

Here is 5G on an Android which I managed to get hold of.

5G disconnected it says.  So that's the problem.

Few minutes later my Huawei CPE Pro 2 picked up frequency on the 5G 😄  I wonder if it had something to do with the Android that tried to connect to 5G as well.

It literally lasted for like 5 minutes and now it's gone again.  (I ran a speed test within that 5 minutes I had 5G and was getting good speeds of 300 Mbps)

The Android phone did that same, it was disconnected at first then switched to 5G NSA.  Then disconnected again.  Then back to NSA.  Keeps switching.

So my guess is the signal is poor?  Am I correct in saying that?  Do you know where the 5G mast is? I can adjust the antenna

No, not nesceceraly, this is what I was saying in earlier Posts, EE use 5G ENDC, the Site you are Logged onto appears to be 4G Only, so the 5G is come from another Mast.

On the EE Network its common for the 5G to be discounted over 5G ENDC, even if you right up to a Full Blown 4 and 5G Mast it can still show as 5G Discounted even though your Device shows a 5G Signal, you sometimes need a Data Dump (a heavy Download) for the that State to change from 5G Disconnected to Connected (On Netmonster it may just go from Discounted to just showing 5G or NR together with the 4G CA Bands, depends on the Netmonster Version Number and the which Network or Phone Type).

Thats why I said earlier do a Full Ooka Speed Test and see if the 5G Kicks in half way through the Download Test. by the way Ooka Speed test does normally detect a 5G Connected State (Phone and Device dependant) so it should show either an LTE (4G) or a 5G test result after the Test, should also show this within the Results History.

@Ar5had07 Wecome to the World of 4G and 5G LTE Trickery, no one said it was going to be easy.  🙂

@Ar5had07 now that youve got a Android Phone you can now do some Number Crunching Field Tests (Please tell me its not a Samsung).

Download the other 2 Apps I mentioned earlier, as they will give you 5G Signal Strengths, 5G PCi Data and which 5G Bands and Frequencies you are using (note, 5G maybe referred to as NR, depends on the App), then have a play with it all and write down all this additional 4G and 5G Info, as this will all come in handy later when your Driving around Dartford taking Signal info which is what your going to be doing over the next few Days and Weeks.
