All data gone overnight

Something strange happened overnight. I got a text from EE at 2:19am telling me I'd used 80% of my data. Then at 3:23am, all my data is gone. All this while I'm asleep in bed.

I have an iPhone with OS fully up to date. WiFi is available for any background data use. I do not use any auto backup services. Nothing has changed on this phone for weeks.

I am on EE PAYG with a weekly talk pack and many year's worth of boosts up to 1.3 gb a week. I'm a light user with barely a fraction of that used in a typical week. It renews on Sundays.

So all this said, it is bizarre that all this data would just disappear overnight.

I have looked at the battery usage stats on the iPhone, and overnight shows a typical low power use. Nothing out of the ordinary running. Just the usual periodic auto-checking of email. Certainly nothing that would explain any untypical background data usage.

So could this be something amiss at EE's end?

They told me a chunk of my data had gone on Tiktok. I don't have Tiktok. I've never used Tiktok. I'm not 12 years old!

Anyway, it hasn't happened since... yet... touch wood.

I've decided to leave EE. Taken a 30 day sim only deal with a budget network (that uses Vodafones network). I don't like being fobbed off when there is clearly a problem with EE that if they are looking into they aren't telling people and are effectively blaming us or our phones or apps, all of which appear to be different.

This has happened to me also. Data rest on 20th, got a text on 21st saying all my data had been used. Spoke to EE and their excuse was that the resetting of my data used all me data what a joke!

They gave me an additional 10gb on 21st and again today I have received a text stating all my data has been used.

My phone is fully up-to-date and I connect to WiFi mostly. I have data saving on so no background data is used for my apps.

Also for all of this month (July) I have only used 3.99gb of data yet apparently EE think I've used 19gb since 20th of this month.

Definitely an issue on their end and trying to put blame on customers instead of resolving this issue!

Hi @Ds2591,

Welcome to the EE Community. 🙂

Our Technical Support Team will be happy to take a look at this if you get in touch.

I think it's a disgrace that all EE do is to give extra data, but offer no solution. I've had it happen twice, been escalated to the top of the customer service tree, and still told I was lying effectively.

It's not a solution to the problem though

I want to chime in and say I have had the exact same issue. My data has been used up overnight for two months in a row.

I called EE and was also told that it was Youtube background data, which doesn't agree with my phone usage data. I have seen half a dozen posts on these forums about this over the last week, and EE refuses to acknowledge the issue and instead blames us customers.

Because of this I have filed a complaint and left EE. It's one thing to for this data issue to happen, but having customer service offering no real solution or timescale for this issue to be fixed is unacceptable.

Sadly I still have 21 of a 24 month sim only contract to run. Despite the problems here, and having been an EE customer for 4 years, they want me to pay £450+ to leave. Hope you have better service with another provider.

Sorry to hear that Caz, fortunately I was out of contract so I could leave easily.

I'm still interested in these threads to see if EE actually fix this, they still haven't responded to the complaint I made a few days ago. Hopefully if enough people kick up a fuss then EE will do something about this. I'd encourage anyone else who is having this issue to comment/make new posts on this topic.

I did get in touch and an operator waited so long for tech support to answer, they cut me off after 20 minutes.

I'm now chatting to someone who is trying to blame background apps for my "overnight" use of 4gb when i was asleep.

My average use has never exceeded 5 or 6gb.  Now i have a new EE sim with double data from BT, its suddenly 20GB in 20 days? No way. and no way will I accept a "5gb one off bonus" to appease me - it's not my fault, i haven't used my data.

Come on EE, sort it out.
