Going wireless broadband

Hello,

I'm moving to a house that has the bare minimum broadband and so I'll have to use mobile broadband as my main connection, perhaps with the wired broadband as a backup.

I tested the broadband in the new house and only got 16 down / 4 up. For working from home, that's not enough to manage zoom calls. I repeated the test using an iPhone 13 Pro Max and got a healthy 95 down and 28 up. (Aside FTTC is 1.5Km)

If I use a dedicated 4G router ( I decided to get the Teltonika RUTX50 4G/5G router with an external housing and antennas) will I get any increase in throughput?

What SIM do I need to get in order to get unlimited data with no slow downs -I am not sure of my current usage (I use BT Broadband but that doesn't tell me how much data I use per month) .

Are limits there that are dependent on the 4G mast I am connecting to - I assume it is this one - 60.243971, -1.315807 ?

Bottom line - is the EE unlimited data only SIM the way to go?

Do I need to take anything else into account to get a decent wireless broadband service?

Steve

You should about the same throughput from a mobile router as from a mobile phone.

You can get an unlimited data SIM with "Our best speeds, no max. Mbps" from EE.

Your FTTC speeds look rather on the slow side. If you want to look at them more deeply, please would you carry out the following steps for starters, which will enable us to diagnose the problem and advise you further. Do not restart your router to do these tests:

1. Post your full router stats:

  • For a SmartHub: login and go to Advanced Settings > Technical Log > Information. Obscure your names & any numbers in the BB Username & also the SSIDs.

Full router stats are key to any speed & connection issues.

2. Try a wired speedtest, using an Ethernet cable supplied with the router, here http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html . Click on the "Results Page" button at the bottom of the graph you first see and then copy to here just the "Link to this result:" link that you see below the next main graph.

3. What does BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker estimate for your phone number? Post just the whole table and the line above it, blanking out your phone number. If it doesn't recognise your phone number or you don't have one, use the Address Checker, not the Postcode Checker.

Hi,
I don't yet live at that location, so don't have access at the moment.

I followed the BT Wholesale broadband checker and the upload speed is still too low for my needs:

I did a Wireless Broadband test outside the house yesterday and got 87 down / 52 up using an EE iPhone SIM.

Thank's for the reply.
I tested yesterday using a Teltonika RUTX50 with an EE iPhone SIM and got 87 MBps down and 52Mbps up.

With the "Our best speeds, no max. Mbps" plan - will that increase the upload speed?

I'm currently uploading my data archive to the cloud - 8 hours per night (to not saturate my connection) with my current broadband provider still puts me at about 10 months to go!! I would love to get that out of the way!
