4GEE broadband router and western digital hard drive problem

We have recently bought this router (replacing a BT Halo system), and have plugged a large Western Digital hard drive into it. This hard drive previously worked very well with the BT router, but we now find that downloading files from the it to our laptops is much slower than before. Can anyone throw light on the problem?

Yes it is. It's plugged into the Lan1/WAN port.
