My phone was due for an upgrade a couple of months ago. At the time, I wasn't interested in getting a new mobile handset so instead I decided to keep my current mobile phone and upgrade my data plan instead. I've since decided that I'd like a new mobile handset, however as I've committed to a contract for the data it won't let me choose a new handset without starting a whole new data plan as well. Is there a way I can upgrade my handset only, without having to choose a data plan?

When you refer to a "data plan", do you mean a SIM-only pay-monthly plan? Or do you genuinely mean a data-plan where voice calls are either not available, or all chargeable?
If, as I suspect, you mean a SIM-only plan, then you are able to revert back to a phone-based plan anytime IF you moved to that SIM-only plan from a phone-plan.
Check your bill for the name of the plan you're on.
