My contract expires soon but I'm still being told by EE I'll be charged X amount to leave "early:" when can I leave without incurring a charge?
Do I have to wait the exact date of the contracts length?

How are you being told you'll be charged to disconnect before the end of your minimum term?
You always need to give at least 30days notice to terminate, but if that notice expires before your minimum term does, then early termination charges apply.

An automated text message from EE I receive whenever I click "I want to leave ee" on the ee website.
It's says to leave early will cost x amount,
I currently have 44 days left on contract.

It is just informing you how much it'll cost if you were to leave NOW, not at the end of your min term.

Yes I understood that, my question is when can I leave without paying?
Does it need to be precisely on the date the contract expires or can it be so many days leading up to it?

You always need to give at least 30days notice to terminate, but if you terminate before your minimum term ends, then early termination charges apply.

You can give your notice to cancel w/out any charges 30 days before the end of your min. term.
