Been Charged £600 for not returning a phone after cancelling an upgrade?

What a Christmas present from EE - taking an unauthorised £600 from our bank account on 27th December.

We ordered a 16 Pro Max when it was launched but decided to cancel the order before it was shipped and keep our existing plan and handset.  After this was all confirmed, we continued to receive communication regarding the return of the existing (and now current as we are keeping it iPhone 15 Pro Max).  Spoke to Telephone customer services multiple times, who reassured us that all was fine and this was essentially an admin/system delay/error.

Skip forward a month and £600 has been taken for the handset that is tied to the current and existing contract!?

Had a similar drama last year when the 15 Pro Max's were delayed shipping due to demand but EE insisted on the 14 Pro Max back before the newer phone had even been shipped, constantly threatening charges.  How hard can it be in 2024 to sort out this pretty basic and fundamental processes and data flows?  Mind blowing incompetency.

Farcical, bordering on illegal business practice.  Absolutely getting referred to bank fraud and the mobile ombudsman - and absolutely moving to literally any other network.  What a complete joke.

Usual 7-10 days BS to wait for a refund.  Appalling company.
