3G Plan Ending

Janet47

EE have written to me saying my current 3G plan will no longer be supported from January 2023. I was with Orange for years until EE took it over.

I am 75 and have a Doro PhoneEasy 606 as my hearing isn’t great. It’s quite old but working fine. I need it mainly for receiving access code texts from such as my bank as part of the logging in process checking ID. I have an Aple Imac desktop for internet access.

The letter says I need a new plan and device. If I don’t take action they will move me on to a new plan. I realise I will have to change plan but do I have to get a new phone?

@Janet47 , no need to start a new thread, just continue in the one you originally started.

This will depend whether your phone supports 4G, as to whether you will need a new phone.

How long have you had it? You have plenty of time to decide what to do, 3G is being switched off,  that is the reason why and soon 2G will also be switched off.

You may also need a new SIM card if it is very old, as it may not work with 4G, and most likely not with 5G either for that matter if it is an old SIM card.

I see @bristolian has replied to your other thread, so sounds like you will be ok for now.

In some countries there are advanced plans to switch 2G off, that isn't the case in the UK at present.

2G will be with us for quite a while yet, it's only 3G that is bring switched off.

I first bought the phone in 2014 but this accidentally ended up in the washing machine! So I bought the same phone (unused and in perfect condition) in 2019. The first one was ok but for the screen not working.

The sim card has the Orange logo on it and 3G. It must be the original, I can’t remember. EE sent me a new sim card with the Orange logo on it for ‘use on EE’s 3G network’ which I still have unused. I’ve never tried it.

I have contacted Doro to find out more about the phone but they have not come back yet. According to Look4mobile.com it is 2G.

How might I go on with the phone? What will I have to do about the sim card?

@Janet47 , `you will need a new SIM card, I would suggest speaking to EE or if you are near an EE store, you can go in there, you should be able to receive a replacement SIM card. You may want to get a new phone, although the one you have at present may still work if 2G is not switched off yet.

You are correct your Doro Phone is 2G Only, which means it was never compatible with the future 3G, 4G and 5G Technologies (the G just stands for Generation, ie the Next Generation of Technologies).

As your Phone is 2G Only it will not be affected by the 3G switch off by All of the UK Networks and will continue to work as normal. As @bristolian correctly points out although 3G is being switched off there are no plans to currently switch off 2G Services, so agreed you will be fine for now.

In response to 3G being switched off at some point Globally, and then followed by potential 2G switch off, the Doro Phone Company have launched a new range of Phones and Products to include later 4G (LTE) Tech, meaning that these newer Phone, look, feel and function the same as your Original Doro 606 but with some added Future Proofing as well as additional features.
