Smart hub plus options - 3rd party replacement equip EE fibre?

Hi,

Previous system BT FTTC: 60Mbps - Great coverage Wifi and extensive Gig wired network great in home

Google WIFI ; 5 units on ethernet

DrayTek Vigor 130 ADSL/VDSL Ethernet Modem

Upgraded to Fibre 900Mbps/100Mbps

Using Smart Hub Plus speeds as advertised above wired but WIFI range is poor.

Tried using Google WIFI as router but could only achieve around 60Mbps wired test speed with fibre, WIFI good coverage.

Any ideas why Google Wifi wired doesn't give near the 900Mbps download?

I would prefer not to use EE extenders as I have been down this road with BT in past and I am sure they will have issues.

Any thoughts on 3rd party equip that would work with EE as good as SHP wired & also give good WIFI coverage?

M

@Futuresailor Have you looked on google for your mesh issue, assume you found the EE 3rd party connection link and setup. if not here is the link to it.

How Do I Use My Own Router for Home Broadband? | Help | EE

Yeah it was setup and working just throughput was significantly reduced on wired network.

I will check again thanks.

Looking at setting nothing really changes FTTC to FTTP.

Any suggestions on non EE hardware that could future proof my 900 Mbps wired and WIFI?

@Futuresailor  what Google WiFi device do you have?

The later ones are able to cope with faster speeds, but older ones may not ne able to cope.

5 units, Model AC-1304 ; 1 that used to be router EU AC-1304

1 of 5 units above is US unit as above but also states FCC ID A4RAC-1304

@Futuresailor  yjat seems quite an old system and is only WiFi5, so max speeds you would get on WiFi would be 450ish. Plus it is more of a very simple WiFi mesh system.

You just got a 900Mbps line, you need something that can cope with those speeds.

What is your budget, why have you got 5 nodes, how big a space are you looking to cover?

Its a big old house with granite walls, 5 nodes were just to ensure decent WIFI throughout. I have wired in a lot of the rooms.

Budget is sensible-ish, I just don't want to stick with EE equipment and be disappointed soon.

Require the following:

  • Max throughput wired.
  • Large coverage area for wifi (200m3), happy with buying a few Nest! extenders.
  • Setup with with EE fibre 900 is easy as they wont support 3rd party.
  • Ideally future proof.

@Futuresailor  the world is your Oyster.

Minimum WiFi spec should be WiFi6, but if you are investing do consider WiFi7 although they will be pricey.

Vendor will depend on how much info you want from the router, and the LAN port speeds, at least the WAN needs to be 2.5Gb, and more than one LAn port, even at 1Gb will help.

Wired backhaul for the extenders/mesh devices will ensure best speeds and coverage.

Hmmm, I am thinking a grand should be a good starting point - if you are serious! 😎

@Futuresailor In all of this, is there a need for you to have DV for landline, if not you can certainly disguard the EE Router.

On the mesh units, how many do you estimate would be wired backhaul?
