I am switching broadband provider to EE full fibre. The most convenient place for the ONT is a ground floor reception room close to a double plug socket and a Cat 5 Ethernet point.
Currently the broadband router is located in a walk in cupboard on the second floor. This router feeds a cat 5 patch board which has ethernet connections to almost every room in the property. WiFi in the property is a challenge in a number of s
pots with concrete floors and a large footprint.
Can I locate the new broadband router in the same place and still use I to feed the ethernet points in the property by using the ethernet supply to the room where the ONT will be?
Apologies if a dumb question

@NIPerry64 In theory yes you could do as suggested, however Cat 5 is only rated at 100Mbps, whilst the link speed between the ONT and router is 1000Mbps or 1Gbps. You would need to check the LAN cables and see if they are Cat 5 or are the a better spec. Ideally you need them to be Cat 5E or better.

@NIPerry64 The router may still not be in the best spot for wireless Wi-Fi signal distribution but your ethernet sure is, make sure the cable from the ONT newly fitted goes back out of the patch panel to the WAN connection on your new EE router. Hope it all goes smooth Edit: you also lose the ethernet ability at the reception room, single socket only required for the ONT PSU unit!👍
