We have a pay as you go package as we only use our landline for incoming calls. I haven't considered this before but are 0800 numbers free and carry no charges on pay as you go when phoning out?

Calls to 0800 numbers are free across all phones, fixed & mobile, this is a regulatory requirement.
https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-and-broadband/phone-numbers/how-much-does-a-phone-call-really-cost and scroll to the 0800/0808 section
