New Full Fibre - Not even close to “1.6gb”

Ok. I ordered the new EE full fibre “busiest home” package, it’s showing (and advertised) as speeds up to 1.6gb, and the EE app even shows “1.3gb (guaranteed) download speeds, well…….no!

mine just got installed and I’m getting the exact same speed I was getting using my 4G SIM card router (up to 70mbps) the highest it’s been is up to 177mbps then it drops again. I have been reading on some of these forums and apparently the router EE provide isn’t capable of speeds up to 1.3 or 1.6gb, so why even provide customers with it?! I’m massively disappointed with this, they expect customers to pay 69 quid a month for a speed my 4G router delivers??

I’ve done all usual checks, changing wifi channels etc nothing improves it so on that basis It’s either the router itself limiting the speed or the outside line (which apparently they check before install) although it’s a new fibre line that was put in.

For example, my Xbox is the only thing connected right now, im downloading a game update of 5GB which is showing as completing in 40 minutes, it’s only coming in around 155mbps (highest) and drops to roughly 40ish mbps. It should be much faster than this surely??

I don’t want to seem ungrateful but am I expecting to much? Or am I within my right to question this?

I’ve done several speed tests and I’ve noticed a change on the EE app since I posted this question. The “speed guarantee” has vanished. It was showing yesterday that my guaranteed speed was “1.3GB”, today however I think I have a found a flaw.

ive done tests using google, and using EE’s own speed test. Google reported day one, I was only getting 370ish Mbps. Day two, google reported I was getting 520ish Mbps. Today, google reports the same speed and EE won’t show me the speed I’m getting, they instead show me a window saying “your broadband speed could be improved” claiming to text me if the problem persists. There is an issue somewhere because my speeds are to low, Fortnite (a game listed on the WiFi enhancer) was stuttering badly today, so bad I had to put it off. They should also point out that the game boost feature only applies to games on EE’s list, more marketing trickery I spotted.

They do say to give it 10 days while they test the line, I’m paying for 1.6GB so I want to see a massive improvement from 400Mbps! I’ve also bought a new router, the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6 Gaming Router, so I’m doing everything I can to make sure this isn’t anything my end causing this massive drop.

Hmm, interesting.

is there any device you can test hardwired? Or directly  to the ONT? Details for that would be found here:  https://ee.co.uk/help/broadband/getting-started/using-and-configuring-a-third-party-router

The other thing you can do to check for problems with the Fibre/ONT to your house is text Help to 66033

This is speed test (Fast.com) from last night, on my Xiaomi 12T Pro phone (Wifi 6), and on THIRD PARTY TP-Link EAP670 (Wifi 6E access point) on Omada network, with 2.5 Gbps backhaul all over.

Ping it's slightly higher, but that's perfectly fine for WiFi results.

Time to time, my speed come as high as 1.8 Gbps, but that is rare occurence, whilst that maximum pure link possible, and other devices are taking their toll.

On hardwired computer, it comes as low as 3ms loaded and 2ms unloaded.

That said, it's entirely possible to have decent speed on "Busiest home broadband" a.k.a. 1.6 Gbps EE BB, just NOT with provided EE smart router plus.

Wow - that is impressive! Hopefully the ASUS router Zero is getting will be similar.

@RachT123

And on a good day via Ethernet you can get

Brugie58_0-1719250134913.png

Via a Draytek V3912 router

Note - Openreach may be overprovisioning ( unofficially ) this service to achieve 1.8Gb

Wouldn't honestly be surprised if it is overprovisioned to try and consistently get 1.6Gbps  (even my 500mbps gets 520mbps most of the time on Ethernet)

Sorry I know this is 7 months old but for anyone looking at this now Just for info. The router they supply with the 1.6Gbps service actually does produce 1.6Gbps as long as you have a 2.5Gbps Port or adapter.

I was installed yesterday - I am blown away with the right out of the box speed!

@pcoventry8 : The router they supply with the 1.6Gbps service being the Smart Hub Pro would help peeps id it.

In my opinion, the way they sell and advertise the 1.6 Gbps package is misleading, as the equipment provided only supports 1 Gbps. To achieve those speeds over Wi-Fi, you’d essentially need to live on top of a mountain with no interference.

For those facing issues, as a network engineer, I recommend performing speed tests by connecting your PC directly to the PON port using an Ethernet cable. You can set up a PPPoE connection on your Windows PC for accurate results.
