How to deactivate the SSIDs "ee wifi" and "ee wifi-x" from my Smart Hub Plus

Hi there, yesterday I started to get EE Home broadband, I have noticed that it shows the SSIDs: ee wifi (open) and ee wifi x (closed) networks too that other people can log in to if they have ee login details.

II'd like to opt out from this service. I did not agree to share my broadband with anyone else so would like to stop these other networks appearing.

I have looked through xx.xx.xx.254 dashboard settings and advanced settings and app but cannot see a way of stopping these sharing networks.

Can I please have some help to remove this SSIDs from my Smart Hub Plus, router model SH31B? thanks

This is simply you opting out of accessing any WiFi hotspot not removing your own router as a link for the public to use. I have requested EE to stop sharing my router using it as a hub for EE WiFi and EE WiFi-X. I didn’t provide my consents for this.

BT WiFi or EE Wifi is an unsecured connection. BT Wifi-X or EE Wifi-X is a secure connection.

It is part of the BT/EE Broadband Free Wifi service - the BT/EE Wifi-X SSID allows devices to auto connect without the user having to login via a landing page.

If it was showing up with your own BT/EE Hub turned off, then the BT/EE WiFi hotspots would be from nearby BT/EE Hubs, as already mentioned in this thread by @XRaySpeX

This isn't a new thing, it was just the same as BT have been doing for many, many years on their hubs, of which you could simply opt out of it if you wanted too.

EE just did exactly the same and you've always had the option of opting out of this easily, just as @John-C has posted in the marked solution to this thread.

Most people won't get it now on their EE hubs and it shouldn't be displayed for everybody to see.

It is still available though, although it is hidden away ftom public view and technically only really should be used now by engineers.

For more on this, read the full post in this old thread below, as I've just included the relevant part for this thread:

https://community.ee.co.uk/t5/Apple-Devices/How-do-you-connect-to-EE-WiFI-X/td-p/1319948

.....this signal has been withdrawn and is now only available for engineer use. It was originally designated for iPad and iPhones users, due to the way these devices had to connect to our network. However this was resolved and is being phased out and removed....

I do not subscribe, so please do not always expect a reply.

Having renewed broadband/landline contract (hence pushed onto EE), I followed the link to disable approx 5 days ago yet still EE WiFi (hidden SSID) active. This is based on WiFi analyser (signal same distance as my SSID).

A tad annoying it's by default on with EE WiFi. At least in the early BB days an option on the SH router to disable it.

So question is how to eliminate EE WiFi on the EE SH2 yet retain DV landline phone yet have only your SSID active?  Perhaps the 2nd part to this question is (if you deactivate WiFi on SH2) how to connect a 2nd router to do the WiFi for you?

@google1901 Hidden ssid is currently not able to be disabled who knows when or if feature will happen, not sure if it is to do with guest network, so if you wish to find out turn it on and see what happens then let the forum know.

You can turn the ssid off, but you may lose the DV so same again test if you wish. Any secondary router should ideally be connected by Ethernet cable to the primary router. You will be able to connect an Ethernet device to the EE router to switch the ssid back on, else factory reset it as long as you know of any changes that you have made.

@google1901 : The Hidden SSIDs are not EE WiFi - see @bobpullen 's earlier reply.

Hi John

I have opted out of WiFi hot spots as suggested and waited a week, rebooted router and it still broadcasts EE wifi open network to the public.  This is an outrage and totally unacceptable.

If this is not fixable it will be bye bye EE contract as I am within 14 days and have not given concent for the public to connect to a device inside my house and additionally I do not want unnecessary electromagnetic radiation broadcasting in my home.

Please kindly advise asap.

Thankyou.

@Schmergy What router are you currently using?

Hi Jim,

Smart Hub Plus , don't have model to hand but it's the latest delivered June 2024.

I really hope this ee wifi issue is resolvable  as it will be annoying if I have to cancel the contract.  Why do they deceive customers?

@Schmergy Are you sure that the EE Smarthub+ is transmitting the EE WiFi SSID along with your EE-****** router wireless? Was and still is a feature of the BT Smarthub2, just checked as neighbour still with BT for broadband and his router is transmitting the broadcast. My EE Smarthub+ does not, and i am opted in for the service when out and about but have not used it as yet.

Edit, and link below for the public WiFi feature.

Help & advice | Find WiFi hotspots | EE WiFi

My install of EE 900mb BB and digital voice forced on me by BT Installed 19/9/24

Sept 30 2024 I have SH31b it is broadcasting EE WIFI UNSECURED and EE WIFI X secured

i have not the option to look for hidden ssd or turn off the public BB

I too am unhappy about an unsecured network on my property

if this is used for illegal activities will it come back to bite me?

Any one into illegal activities have an open 900mb free WiFi

there must be dozens around as Open Reach ( McQuin)  have installed 2 a day for the last few weeks in our area

none of my neighbours will bother upgrading they have now got free 900mb wifi

i agree it’s not secure so they can use there own for banking etc but for streaming pirate videos and the like the world is their oyster

opting out of the FTTC BT WIFI did not remove it so I purchased my own router

i am not subscribed to EE WiFi or BT WiFi as before this I had an ASU’s GT5300 router to get rid of the BT fon as it was then on the BT router even turning it off on the hub was allowed then but every night BT accessed the hub an re enabled it hence me ditching the BT HUB I have not used a BT one since

the EE SH31b can not yet be replaced by a generic router

so I THINK THE ORIGINAL QUESTION IS UNANSWERED too
