Full Fibre Install.. external junction box position?

I have a question about the Full Fibre setup if anyone might know?

We currently have a pole connection and the entry point is upstairs in a second floor room (office). Essentially the pole line goes to the corner of the house, then round the side and into the second floor office.

From reading the full fibre needs an external junction box, which is powered.

Essentially we don't want that half way up the house.

Will they still fit that ground level and run the power to it up to the second floor, where the router currently is or do they not like doing that?

So does the external junction box have to be on ground level or are they flexible about the position?

Thank you 🙂

@jezthomp1   the external junction box is not powered.

The Openreach engineer will always want to take the easiest option and will look at options for ground level access with power sockets nearby inside the property.

If you have not seen it, this guide from Openreach may help. https://www.openreach.com/help-and-support/full-fibre-broadband-installation-checklist

@jezthomp1

I’ve always found OR quite amenable. The external box and inside ONT being within a couple of metres of each other helps. The offer of a cup of tea and chocolate biscuit too 🤷🏼

Where, ideally, would you want the service to come in and the fibre router live?

Currently the pole line goes to the top corner of the house below the roof, then down round the side of the house to our first floor office, then through a hole to the side of the window. The other side is the existing Openreach box that the router is connected to.

It seems Full fibre needs an additional box, happy for this to go inside, if it has to go outside I don't really want it half way up the house before a first floor window, rather it on ground level  below the window at least.

The external junction box needs to be outside. It's where the incoming cable from the pole via near the roof is connected to the cable from the hole in the wall. It is can't be a continuous run to the hole in the wall.

It is not very big.. Mine is near ground level directly below where the pole cable meets the roof. The cable then travels near base of house to hole to room in middle where the ONT is.

Ah ok, So there can be a run of cable from the pole roof connection before it gets to the external junction box, is there a limit on this? Then i suppose the question is how far from the junction box to the hole into the house is allowed to be? Would they be happy with the junction box being ground level then a cable run up to a first floor window height?

You'll have to ask engineer when he comes.

@jezthomp1

Can’t speak to poles. Ours is a new’ish estate and the fibre is in pavement ducting. As soon as I saw OR dragging it up I banged my fibre order in. They did my Fibre 100 for the same price as I was paying for 60meg FTTC then a few days later, offered 900 for a £1 more. That took about a nanosecond. BT. Those were the days.

I digress. There is a connection box at ground level outside where the duct comes up. See pic.

But I needed them to run “my fibre” across the front of the house and in to where the copper went and through to the new internal ONT box to which the SH+ is connected, about 1.5m away.  They agreed to run it slightly buried so nothing really visible. Very pleased with it.

Hope you get fixed up as suits best.

@jezthomp1 Are you happy with the way that the copper cable comes off the pole, and if fiber was to go the same existing route, it is NOT essential that an outside box is fitted, i prepped all needed for the fiber install, the MJ Quinn OR contractor was a complete waste of space, his guide lines were just so stupid it was unreal, but he marked the job up as customer not ready, that delayed the install by 21 day's but requested OR for second and they were in/out 30 mins, done and dusted. Picure below but you need to make sure that power is available for the ONT, mine done pole to roof dormer, up the truss like the copper cable just 2 over to make it easier for OR, cable terminated from pole inside roof dormer space, and there short splice connected between box and ONT, powered ONT, FW updated, OR happy, switched cable from FTTC to Ethernet, system connected and all done.OR FF500 Install inside Roof spaceOR FF500 Install inside Roof space
