Did you mean:

Either my EE router is crackling or my house is haunted and need to move.

Not to sound like a wimp. But it's 03.00 in the morning, I'm working as I work night shifts from home, and watching Youtube documentaries about HP Lovecraft and Stephen King, as I also write horror novels (happy to share the links to anyone interested). When suddenly not too far from me I hear this aggravated crackling noise that I naturally assume is one of the Old Gods decided to break through into our plane of existence via my living room wall in Leith, Edinburgh. Now, before I completely freak out and try to convince my letting agency that my apartment is haunted by eldritch monsters hellbent on human enslavement, starting with me, I want to check if the crackling may be from the EE router that is sitting in the corner and not something trying to break through for the delicious taste of my highly caffeinated blood. The sound might have been nightmarish claws burrowing through the concrete, or the electronic crackle of an EE router that has not been working terrifically well and may have developed a fault. Yours sincerely terrified. D.

@DRust : Very unlikely to be from a router.

1. Post your full router stats:

  • For a BrightBox: login and go to Advanced Settings > System > DSL Status. Also post 'System Uptime' from top of System Log page.
  • For a SmartHub: login and go to Advanced Settings > Technical Log > Information. Obscure your names & any numbers in the BB Username & also the SSIDs.

2. What does BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker estimate for your phone number? Post just the whole table and the line above it, blanking out your phone number. If it doesn't recognise your phone number or you don't have one, use the Address Checker, not the Postcode Checker.

so my place is obviously haunted by eldritch monsters and I should move because the electronic router couldn't possibly be crackling. Fantastic.

Have you tried getting closer to the router to listen for the crackling?

Or does the sound stop when you unplug it?

Make sure the plugs are fully located and if it is still happening give the Broadband Care team a call and ask for a new router.

Which router is it by the way, some of the BT based routers have been known to make strange noises.
