EE Smart Hub Massive Latency Spikes

Hello All,

I switched from BT to directly with EE a few months back and as part of this I switched from the BT branded Wifi hub to the EE smart WIFI hub plus. Previously I was able to causally game with no issues via wifi.

Other than changing the Hubs, there has been no change what so ever in my set up. Download speed tests show I'm well above 100mbps. However since the change, when I'm gaming the ping will normally sit around 25, but every 20 or so seconds I'm getting massive lag spikes where my ping is hitting 300-400.

I've reset the hub and my PC multiple times with no effect every time. I've even changed my wifi adaptor on my PC.

EE in live chat can only suggest getting a wired connection. This won't work for myself due to house layout being awkward to string a wire around, hence why I use Wifi.

I've noticed others in the forum have raised this exact issue, citing it may be a defect with the hub. Has anyone had any luck resolving this, as so far EE haven't taken on board my complaints about the poor connection.

@Hoddsykins A previous OP with issue posted that login to router and changing to wifi5 mode solved his latency issue. Details on card back of router will get you there. HTH

I hadn't spotted that work around so thank you! However, I've just attempted this work around and unfortunately same issue still presenting...

@Hoddsykins If you suspect that you have a wireless wi-fi issue, then you will have to eliminate any potential problem it is unfortunate but only way to go. Switch of all wifi devices if possible, then test with the PC alone as the only device. You could run a ping from the Admin cmd prompt against google dns 8.8.8.8 and see how it responds. If you are having a recurring hold in router responses it should show up. HTH

@Hoddsykins - out of curiousity, are you using the Wi-Fi Enhancer feature on the Smart Hub Plus?

So I have their super duper 1.6GB fibre. Had issues with speeds to the property but that got sorted eventually. Was with BT before...but using the Smart Hub and one wifi disc I can achieve speeds rheoufh wifi to devices of 800Mb individually(PS5). The issue is with 'jitter'. Seems to be OK until about 7pm at night and then this jitter appears. Basically what is happening is that although the Latency sits anywhere between 16 and 25 when you actually run tests the deviation is spectacular after 40 odd seconds. I have shown the deviation below based on a 3 min check. This is ruining online gaming where it will just completely freeze for a second and then revert back to normal. Have tried everything to fix this but EE have no answers. Optimised everything and actually had to turn off the Game and Work optimisers completely as they make the latency worse somehow. Not getting anywhere with EE and have no clue how to fix this - even tried changing WiFi from 6 to 5 and various other things. Unable to use ethernet.....any help would be welcome. Nobody at EE, other than one guy who spent 2 hours with me going through things, can get this resolved once and for all.

@AyrshireCSC Have you tried setting your PS5 network for a different DNS server to see if it can improve the server response. Copy of link below if you wish to try.

Unfortunately it isn't just the PS5. I WFH and teams calls also drop out momentarily as well. I have measured the latency and jitter extensively now and there is definitely a big deviation with jitter which can only be linked to the wifi/hub as there is less than 1% deviation if I am wired into the hub!

@AyrshireCSC Wired is always way better than wireless, its your choice, the router cannot have a change to the dns server, and if you wished to see if it was a ps5 then it has a fairly easy way to do it. up to you.

Well the problem is that I had BT before so had the smart hub 2. I have run exactly the same tests from the same devices and locations on WiFi- with both the EE and BT hubs. The results for BT show a deviation(jitter) of 4%....EE show over 40%. Latency on the BT Smart Hub was 12ms - EE is never below 24 on average. Obviously latency under 40 is good generally but not with the jitter thrown in and constant lag/drops every minute or so. I still think there are big issues with these new EE hubs.
