EE App Will Not Run a Speed Test

Will182
Explorer

I saw a number of previous posts at the end of last year that people were having issues with the EE App after being moved over from BT.

We only moved over in Feb/March and are having the same issues. I want to try and run the tests because our wifi connected house alarm keeps dropping connection and waking everyone up each night so trying to work out the issue (only started since the new EE WIFI).

Spoke to EE Customer service and they said they were not aware of the problem so wanted to see if others were still having an issue.

@sea2dog : There isn't an EE "superhub"! What is the name of the EE BB plan are you on including its speed? Which EE router & WiFi extenders, if any, do you have (read label or post a pix)?

If you think I helped please feel free to hit the "Thumbs Up" button below.

@sea2dog Take a look at the various EE Routers link below, and the pictures give them away, EE Smarthub (2023) is the same and direct replacement for the BT Smarthub2 version, if you have the Plus or Pro then you are into more serious equipment spec, any Router change can be difficult so that is not to be unexpected in the least but they do try to make it easier but does not always work out that way!

I checked your link and can see mine, it says on this on via your link that it's WiFi 6, yet when I go to my WiFi settings it says WiFi 5, why would this be?

The EE Smart Hub Plus is a Wi-Fi 6 router, but it may be displaying as Wi-Fi 5 on some devices due to a few reasons. It's likely backward compatible with Wi-Fi 5, and some devices may be defaulting to the older standard or experiencing compatibility issues. You can potentially resolve this by checking your router settings (Hub Manager) and potentially adjusting the Wi-Fi settings, or ensuring your devices are compatible with Wi-Fi 6.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Wi-Fi 6 Compatibility:
The EE Smart Hub Plus is designed to support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), which is an upgrade over Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac).

  • Backward Compatibility:
Wi-Fi 6 devices are designed to be backward compatible with older Wi-Fi standards, including Wi-Fi 5. This means your Wi-Fi 5 devices should still be able to connect to the Smart Hub Plus.

  • Potential Issues:
    • Device Defaulting: Some devices might be defaulting to Wi-Fi 5, even when connected to a Wi-Fi 6 router.

    • Compatibility Problems: There might be compatibility issues with specific devices or their drivers, leading them to connect using Wi-Fi 5.

  • Troubleshooting:
    • Check Router Settings: You can access your EE Hub Manager (usually at 192.168.1.254) and check the Wi-Fi settings. You may be able to see if it's configured to use Wi-Fi 6 or if there are any specific settings related to compatibility.

    • Update Device Drivers: If you're experiencing issues with specific devices, ensure their Wi-Fi drivers are up to date.

    • Consider Router Updates: If you haven't already, ensure your EE Smart Hub Plus has the latest firmware installed.

    • Try Disabling 5GHz: Some users have reported success by temporarily disabling the 5GHz band in the router settings and then re-enabling it.

    • Consider WPA2: Some users have found that switching the security protocol from WPA3 to WPA2 has resolved connection issues.

  • EE Smart Hub Pro:
The EE Smart Hub Pro is a Wi-Fi 7 router, and it supports the 6GHz band, unlike the Smart Hub Plus, which is Wi-Fi 6.

It would appear it depends on the phone device whether it displays as WiFi 5 or WiFi 6.

Btw, I can actually do a speed test on my ee app, my issue really was it not always changing from 2.4ghz to 5ghz, it did this morning so maybe the rebooting and cache deletion helped.

One part of the app would tell me it couldn't restart my hub,, but it physically did, so probably an app bug.
